Hi Everyone:
I now have a clear idea of what each of our public art collaborations is planning. I will remain available on this blog until 7PM. Afterward I will check the blog until I leave town on Wednesday to (literally) get my own show on the road. Please do not hesitate to email me at my UArts account or to continue to post to this blog. I will do my utmost to respond.
Thanks, all, for a very productive session today!

Tape
So, Adam and I were talking about the supermarket idea and we decided it would be difficult to convince managers of the supermarket. As I was looking for Artists, I found Agathe de Bailliencourt, (http://www.agathedeb.com/ click installation works and then Yogya '07) a french artist the does installations of painted stripes.. That gave us the idea to make a large tape painting.. A painting made out of draft tape, which comes in all different colors and placing it in the door way of the entrance of a subway. So even though you can see through the painting, you cannot get into the subway or get out of the subway, altering the routine of city life. We have decided to depict a landscape in our tape painting.. We have already tried making samples of images in tape with a utility knife and it has proven successful, as long as you use the right type of tape. We can back the large image on clear plastic sheet to act as a base and then cut out the unnecessary pieces. We were thinking of placing this image on one of the subway entrances closer to city hall because they seem to get more traffic. Maybe the Walnut/Locust stop, the entrance across the street from Terra?
We are still slightly debating if we should abandon the idea of an image and just tape up some of center cities subway entrances in a grid pattern in the middle of the night. And if we should possibly film or document this other then just a journal ??

I like the idea of a tape landscape thought I do have a suggestion: Would it alter the piece in ways that you disapprove of to mount the tape on thick vinyl sheets, then make a slitted certain from the vinyl and hang it in front of the subway entrance? That way you would not impede anyone's progress into the subway (thus mitigating your arrests for defacing public property) but I think you would still get the desired effect.
Regarding documentation - it seems to me you could surreptitiously hang out with a small video or still camera and document the reactions of passers-by to the project.
Let me know what you think...I prefer the landscape idea to taping up the entrances...for reasons I mention above...

How will the thread physically connect the pieces/sculptures? And what manner will you choose to physically connect the pieces/sculptures to the public sites you choose?
We plan to tie, weave, thread, and wrap the string into the individual objects. The physical connections to the site will vary. For instance, since some of mine will be integrated into permanent structures in the city (such as a street sign) they will be better affixed to the site than a more ephemeral object like one of Robin's twigs placed on the sidewalk...I am concerned that Robin's very small ephemeral sculptures will be completely lost in the city...any thoughts on what you will do to address this? Do you care if the pieces are never seen or noticed?
Part of the piece is the acceptance that the works may be completely lost. As artists we are willfully abandoning the tradition of making art for the sake of viewing. They may be noticed, they may not. It is up to the citizen/viewer to recognize the art around them.
Do you two consider this project more of a process piece wherein as you work many of your questions about it will be answered as you adjust your process? Or is this piece more a performance, at least Mike's part of it? Or is it strictly conceptual in other words, the "outcome" is less important than the idea?
The piece is mostly conceptual where the ideas and concepts generated from the act will serve as the basis for the work's importance.
Could you encapsulate what the idea is in two sentences? This is a test I often apply to my own ideas for projects to see if they make sense.
We plan to create small-scale sculptures from found objects to place back into the public environment in unassuming areas. People may or may not notice the works (and we have no way of knowing for sure) but the idea that someone may stumble upon the piece and make an intimate connection is what we find interesting.
How will you clearly demonstrate a project outcome? Or is this of importance to the piece conceptually?
The piece will be presented strictly in photographs documenting the creation and placement of the sculptures. Their fate is left to the mystery of the viewer.
Robin and Mike:
This is what you wrote with my comments/questions following:
Objective: Our final plan for the project is to install various small-scale sculptures in an urban as well as a suburban landscape. Robin will work mostly with natural materials (leaves, twigs, stones) and Mike will incorporate site-specific materials such as fences, signs and trees. The common material will be white sewing thread. We will use various techniques such as stitching, wrapping, weaving and knotting to create the work. We hope to create a connection to the environment and encourage people to notice their surroundings more.
Robin: Robin’s pieces will focus more on the care and craft that goes into making the pieces. They will be objects that can be worked on in the privacy of the home. It will be a part of her everyday life to spend time working on the pieces. Then at the end of the project, the pieces will be scattered back into the environment (Philadelphia), photographed, and then left alone for any outcome (be randomly discovered by pedestrians, not seen at all, blown away, etc.) We will NOT check up on these pieces, the unknown outcome is a large part of the meaning to this project
Mike: Mike’s portion of the project will be partially based in the suburban landscape. He will focus more on site-specific projects, such as weaving around fences and signs, or branches on tress. The site will be at a park in Worcester, Pennsylvania (Mike’s hometown). He will also be creating pieces for an urban landscape, but we were interested to see how the different locations will be perceived, and how the working process will be different.

This is part of our poster. The bottom half is going to be edited to explain the rules, and will have an envelope attached with the stickers in it.
We're going to have four posters all together, two will be in Uarts (one in Terra, one in Anderson), and two will be outside of the school (one in University City, the other on Chestnut street in a Starbucks). We'll be recording which stickers go to what location so that we can track them.
Annie and Hyein:
good thinking...but I still suspect that the piece may benefit by bringing it physically back to the people who participated with the stickers...but maybe that's just what I would want if it were my piece...I always look for many layers and levels from which to engage people in public projects....for the time being, why don't you proceed as per your plans and we'll see what happens...
as for the porno...OK...we live in a free country...just be sure to place a warning on your blog site....
All in all, this seems like it may be a really good project engaging both the virtual "public" and the actual public...in fact that's the thing I like best about it.. it requires that people participate from several different layers and places, and also seems to allude to the "private public" and the "public public".

The blog is going to be part of the final piece, but not entirely. We're going to collect the photographs (either taken by us, or by the poster), and arrange them into book (I'm thinking something similar to a scrapbook).
As for the pornographic images, I was planning on posting them uncensored. I'd put a warning on the blog that it may contain adult images, but didn't want to censor them and/or admit them completely. I think humor is going to be a big part of this project.
OK Holly...just wanted to bring up the issue..I do think this could be a very strong piece if you are able to get real reactions in the stores you visit...

Hyein and Annie:
The graffiti mail-art project looks good, and the idea for the stickers seems promising.
Questions: How will you present the results of your project...is the blog intended to be the piece? If so, I'm fine with that...but I'm wondering if this project could also result in an art print or other multiple poster that announces the results of he project when you physically post them in some of the same locations where you originally placed the stickers? And could this then prompt another series of actions on your blog? It's nice to consider reconnecting with some of the same people both virtually and in real space and time...just a thought.
You wrote: "We're expecting a certain degree of humor in these-- we're interested in seeing how many pornographic drawings turn up. "
What do you want to do if you get pornography? With that also go up on your blog site unexpurgated? Are there ethical considerations in doing so?

I think i may need to do some research about that part... check out some controversial documentaries and see how others have gone about it.
I have no problem videotaping people without their consent, but i would afterward request their permission to show them in my final video
I may also take some filler footage of the salespeople reacting to real customers with their knowledge, i would go about this by telling them ahead of time that i am filming for a project unrelated to their behavior so they do not realize what i am necessarily focusing on.
The disks are more of an intervention that's being done.
Someone could ask, "Why the hell are you handing these out?"
I'd say, "yeah, what do you think of that? That wasn't too long ago."
Politics - The whole point is to seem crazy to strangers. I think people
will have those words, from the sign board, burned in their head for the
rest of the day.

Holly:
This is well thought-out...are you concerned about the ethical issues of taping people without their knowledge or consent? I don't know that I'm saying you shouldn't do this, but the very question adds richness to your piece, I think. Are you familiar with the documentaries made by Michael Moore? If so what do you think of how he goes about revealing the more sordid aspects of daily life?

Ooops! Sorry, now I see it:
I have a lot of AOL disks that say, "500 hours free," basically free internet if you join. I want to get a concealed microphone to record peoples reactions and have someone film from a distance. I would be handing them out on Broad St. and would get peoples reactions in audio and video.
Question: What are you hoping to record? What do you think people will do? What if they just blow this off? Do you plan to say something to the people you hand these disks out to? Is this more like a performance intervention?
Also, my more political idea is standing around in a public place in the city. I would have a sign that says something or asks a question. One might say, "Who is Saul Alinsky?" and people would sort of turn their heads at that. I would have a series of signs and wear/promote one at a time.
This seems like it might have slightly better prospects...I say that only because people are so accustomed to technology that they might not be that interested in being handed a disk...but a crazy guy with a sign board...now that might get some reactons...tell me more abput the sign board...what would you be doing? Wearing it and walk around? Or hollering something out?

I was thinking of using this HD flip camera that i have, its pretty discreet and i could definatly record sound and video without anyone noticing. I am also thinking that maybe a group member could secretly tape as well. I would want afterwards to approach the salespeople and inform them of my project... this Definatley ads another aspect to the video..
hopefully recording their reaction not only to my performance but the reaction when they find out i was studying them will let me know things like if they are ashamed or proud of the way they acted. i also want to know if the salespeople have any training in customer sensitivity and service.
Holly:
Yes, I think it could be a strong piece but the question remains how will you document this? Video? Suggestion, maybe you could do up-front video wearing a really great (presumably expensive outfit) and another video - also up-front - in a clearly less expensive chic outfit? But then I wonder if you will be allowed to videotape at all if you try to do so honestly and with the store's knowledge? Is there something interesting in the video aspect as well - in other words I wonder if a store's willingness, unwillingness to be taped reveal another aspect of a kind of classism? Or is video (willingness or unwillingness) a completely different issue?

dont know if you caught this the first time.....
we have sort of been getting out own little ideas together separately
I plan on doing some investigative research in and around the shopping district of center city. This will include the "performance" of myself or a group member browsing a store with the intent of iliciting a reaction from the salespeople or other customers. I plan on dressing in a manor that is clearly not professional and may lead one to believe i am of a lower class than the one targeted by the store. I have been doing research on the boutiques in the Walnut/rittenhouse area, mostly reviews by customers. i am hoping to study the social interaction between the (often minimum-wage earning) employees and the customer they are supposed to be helping, and sometimes end up acting discriminatory against.

this blog is talking about discrimination among overweight shoppers. although this is not exactly what i will be researching, the feedback from the bloggers gives a good overview of how some people feel prejudiced against while shopping

Snobbish service but excellent designby ktrlealtor at CitysearchWhile I applaud the exacting fashion sense and the great uber chic-ness of this store I have to condemn its customer service-if you don?t "look" like you can afford the clothes you better turn around and go home to change! The service was snobbish! Still it is one of the best places to pay full price for some excellent labels...Pros: excellent selectionCons: service borders on icy-ever seen Pretty woman???

You can probably borrow audio and video equipment from our AV Depart at UArts....I also have a video camera I will let you borrow from FAMD (it belongs to our Department)...re: heart- rate monitor, I wonder if our health services might have smething...but I guess my additional question would be how to get the actual sound of the heart beating to audio?

Hi Mara,
We are all doing separate ideas that will work as a whole - on video.
I have two ideas for my own: one's more technology based, the other political.
I have a lot of AOL disks that say, "500 hours free," basically free internet if you join. I want to get a concealed microphone to record peoples reactions and have someone film from a distance. I would be handing them out on Broad St. and would get peoples reactions in audio and video.
Also, my more political idea is standing around in a public place in the city. I would have a sign that says something or asks a question. One might say, "Who is Saul Alinsky?" and people would sort of turn their heads at that. I would have a series of signs and wear/promote one at a time.

yeah, safety was my concern too. I was thinking that if I had people at designated corners and such it would work. I like combining the two. I might have access to a heart monitor from when I was younger, but I'll have to talk to my mom, she may have thrown it out. I'll have to try a couple things. carrying the tape recorder and seeing how the sound works out.
OK Group 1.....Lauren, Maria, John, Holly....what do you have? I've been talking with Lauren...are you all involved with her ideas for a project...or are you working on several individual project concepts concurrently? If the latter, are you thinking about presenting them separately or connected in some way?

Lauren:
I'm wondering if you could do both audio and video, but record them separately.....you could go out yourself in a small group with an audio recorder (it will be authentic enough, I think) and send others out to do the same thing. Ditto with video..then edit the two together in iMovie or Final Cut...

Robin & Mike's Public Work Progress

A lot more imagery can be found via Mike's blog..
Lauren:
How would you monitor heart rate? I love the idea...but I am concerned about safety issues. Can you get John or somebody to work with you? Or can you do the project in a little less scary way? Not that I want to undercut the power of the concept, but let's toss around some ideas for doing this without risking life and limb...

I was thinking of recording myself walking home late at night without imagery, and then giving tape recorders to different people and having them walk around late. This way I can compare the breathing and heart rate, as well as the sounds/people they might run into.
I thought this might be interesting because, in theory, I would be more have a faster heart rate then someone like john.
I also thought of doing this by myself and simply dressing differently and having a different attitude, hence the faces. This might have to be a around 9 or 10, not as late. That way I could record peoples (mens) reactions
Another thought I had was to do something similar with video. The only apprehension I had was authenticity. It would be dangerous for me to really go and do this by myself. Although I have been in this situation several times. The images at the bottom are me dressed differently, like with the recording, but it would be video.
The top images are kinda a play off of being safe and being paranoid. Like when you cross the street because a creepy figure is walking towards you and then you realize it's someone you know.

Okay, so Hyein and I have been working on our graffiti mail-art project, and have cemented the idea for the stickers. We decided to have people anonymously post what they love on the stickers. Our poster will have the directions/rules for posting.
The idea is to have small stickers of hopeful or inspiring messages all over the city. Within itself, the project is also a social experiment-- Since we'll be tracking the stickers by placing serial numbers on them, we'll be able to see which group of people (art students vs. non-art students) will be more likely to engage in the project. We're also looking for how many people take stickers but don't use them, or take stickers and use them for personal non-project related use.
We're expecting a certain degree of humor in these-- we're interested in seeing how many pornographic drawings turn up.
Here's our official project blog that explains the rules:
http://loveitstickit.blogspot.com/
It's still undergoing some maintenance (I'm trying to learn HTML! aghh), but it gets the point across.
OK so it looks like we have the following schedule:
2PM Group 1 Laura Maria John Holly
2:30PM Group 2 Hyein and Annie
3PM Group 3 Robin and Mike
3:30PM Group 4 Adam and Kate
In the meantime, please do go ahead and post any research you're working on so we can all get a look at it prior to the meetings. All are welcome to chime in on any of the groups' meetings but you are required to be in attendance only during your own group's meeting time.
Thanks!

This is a review of the boutique Adresse

Snobbish service but excellent design
by ktrlealtor at Citysearch
While I applaud the exacting fashion sense and the great uber chic-ness of this store I have to condemn its customer service-if you don?t "look" like you can afford the clothes you better turn around and go home to change! The service was snobbish! Still it is one of the best places to pay full price for some excellent labels...
- Pros: excellent selection
- Cons: service borders on icy-ever seen Pretty woman???

today in class at 1PM
Hi All and Welcome:
Today, first of all, please sign on individually with a posting to this blog at 1PM. Then, I would like for you to meet right away in your collaborative groups and designate a member to post to the blog. Your posts should contain information about progress on your project between last week and this week.
When I meet with the class collaborative groups virtually to discuss your project, I'm expecting a few paragraphs of text from each group. You can also upload a couple of images if that is helpful in explaining where you are going with the public art project. When you bring up the blog and read this message online at 1PM, and each group selects and signs up for a time to discuss your project (first come first served) with me in real time, I will then be available to immediately talk with your group at your selected virtual meeting time with me. I look forward to answering questions, giving comments and suggestions for your project, etc. Of course other students in the class are also welcome to comment and give suggestions as well.
The following times are available to meet with me via the blog, please post the time that your group wants to meet - remember this is a first come first served choice:
Group 1 - 2PM
Group 2 - 2:30PM
Group 3 - 3PM
Group 4 - 3:30 PM
Group 5 - 4PM
Between 5 and 7PM I will respond to ANY questions, concerns, ideas, etc. from ANY group or group member.
I look forward to our virtual meetings this afternoon and this evening.
Thanks,
Mara
