Hi Adam and Kate; this is what you wrote with my responses following:
Tape
So, Adam and I were talking about the supermarket idea and we decided it would be difficult to convince managers of the supermarket. As I was looking for Artists, I found Agathe de Bailliencourt, (http://www.agathedeb.com/ click installation works and then Yogya '07) a french artist the does installations of painted stripes.. That gave us the idea to make a large tape painting.. A painting made out of draft tape, which comes in all different colors and placing it in the door way of the entrance of a subway. So even though you can see through the painting, you cannot get into the subway or get out of the subway, altering the routine of city life. We have decided to depict a landscape in our tape painting.. We have already tried making samples of images in tape with a utility knife and it has proven successful, as long as you use the right type of tape. We can back the large image on clear plastic sheet to act as a base and then cut out the unnecessary pieces. We were thinking of placing this image on one of the subway entrances closer to city hall because they seem to get more traffic. Maybe the Walnut/Locust stop, the entrance across the street from Terra?
We are still slightly debating if we should abandon the idea of an image and just tape up some of center cities subway entrances in a grid pattern in the middle of the night. And if we should possibly film or document this other then just a journal ??
I like the idea of a tape landscape thought I do have a suggestion: Would it alter the piece in ways that you disapprove of to mount the tape on thick vinyl sheets, then make a slitted certain from the vinyl and hang it in front of the subway entrance? That way you would not impede anyone's progress into the subway (thus mitigating your arrests for defacing public property) but I think you would still get the desired effect.
Regarding documentation - it seems to me you could surreptitiously hang out with a small video or still camera and document the reactions of passers-by to the project.
Let me know what you think...I prefer the landscape idea to taping up the entrances...for reasons I mention above...
